We already saw how to remove the .html extension from Magento.

When you install Magento probably your URLs would be like:

There is an option to remove that index.php from the URL.

Go to your admin panel -> System -> General -> Web -> Search Engines Optimization.

Change Use Web Server Rewrites to Yes.

Explaining the Sitemap SEO Myth

It seems to me that the most common SEO misconception that occurs is the one regarding the sitemap. I often see discussions on business forums about SEO and a very common advice people get when they ask what to do to improve their website’s SEO is to submit a sitemap to Google.

First of all, you need to understand that the term sitemap usually refers to two very different things:

  1. XML Sitemap
  2. HTML Sitemap

In their essence, they are basically the same thing. They contain the same data structured for different purposes. XML Sitemap is the one you submit to Google through the Google Webmaster Tools. HTML sitemap is supposed to be used by actual users, not just bots.

White hat SEO link building campaign is impossible

I’ve seen lots of SEO companies offering link building services and some of them claiming they are white-hat SEOs. I’d like to explain why link building campaign is never white hat SEO. It’s always in some gray area and often completely black hat.

If you want to receive backlinks that are totally white hat, you can’t:

  • Buy links
  • Beg for links
  • Spam or place them on your own in any other way

Basically, you can’t create backlinks that will influence rankings in any non-natural way. This means that only thing you can rely on is your marketing activity. A good white hat link building campaign is actually not link building campaign at all, we’re talking about inbound marketing techniques, content marketing or link bait to be more precise.

Multiple languages, website localization and SEO

I’ve seen many questions about issues related to website localization and multiple languages all over the web. One of the most commonly asked questions is does it count as a duplicated content in the eyes of search engines?

At the SMX Confernece in Sydney Australia, Priyank Garg and Greg Grothaus, Yahoo’s and Google’s search engineers, shared some wisdom with us regarding this common issue.

If you use multiple country domains (ccTLD), even if content is in the same language (identical content) on all of your localized sites (for instance you have it all in English, as it commonly happens with USA, UK and Australia), you will not experience any duplicated content issues / penalties. This is true for both Google and Yahoo, however, you might get some penalty if you abuse this feature (spammy sites) and if you don’t localize your site properly.

A few tips for proper localization of a website:

  1. Use Google Webmaster Tools to set a proper website geotargeting.
  2. Use ccTLD-s (country specific TLD-s) for localized versions of your websites.
  3. Get backlinks from regional sources. Try get listed in some directories specialized for the region you are targeting and try getting some organic backlinks from local websites.
  4. Submit the localized website into proper regional category in DMOZ.
  5. If possible, translate the website into the language of the region you are targeting, this will actually help a lot.
